I don’t think it’s fair to lump gen Z, shreddy technical guitar, and polyphia into the same category. I’m personally not a fan of Polyphia but I think Chon, which sounds stylistically similar, has a lot more groove and evokes pensive and energetic feelings for me. There’s always been music that sounds mechanical in a variety of different genres. It’s just more noticeable when the band is on that robo shred and also lacks emotion. This is all to say, not liking polyphia or robo shred Prog rock doesn’t mean you might not like other prog rock bands or shreddy music. Animals as Leaders, Contortionist, and Tesseract come to mind as good bands in the genre. Metal is a common home for shreddy music because it works there, and plenty of good metal bands shred and play with a lot of feel. Check out Opeth, Carbomb and Necrophagist

It’s an arms race to see how technical and complex you can get without actually caring about making good music. Most of the best music in the last 100 years or so use the same 4 chords. It's not the 'technicality' that is at fault with people who don't 'get' Polyphia (like myself). Bands like Theory in Practice - who's Armageddon theories & Colonizing the Sun are god-tier, suuper technical albums, Spawn of Possession, Martyr etc. are fairly old bands. They have the highest levels of technique and virtuosity imaginable, but they also wrote incredibly memorable stuff. It's just that modern bands don't have the same kind of musical coherence and structure.... which is what we mean when we say something sounds 'unmusical'. This is just what I feel anyway. Tim has phenomenal technique, but isn't musically satisfying for 30+ year olds like me 😆
